For the second time in less than four years, the entire 12 member cast of Disneyland’s “Golden Horseshoe Revue” has been terminated in what a park spokesman calls an attempt to “keep things fresh.”

The cast of the Old West-themed stage show, performed five times a day in Frontierland, includes two singers, six dancers and four musicians, all of whom now must reaudition if they want a shot at their old jobs. They were given notice in a letter dated Dec. 28 and the termination took effect Monday. The attraction is closed temporarily for remodeling.

Several longtime cast members, including two leads, were forced into retirement when the show was revamped in 1986 after more than 45,000 performances.

This time around, there are no major changes planned for the show, according to park spokesman Bob Roth. “It’s just done to kind of keep things fresh,” Roth said Tuesday, explaining the decision to reaudition the cast.

“According to the contract we have, (park officials) do have this option,” said Danny Smith, a violinist since 1986 with the revue’s band. Still, he added, “It’s disturbing to be terminated and not know if you’re going to get your job back.

“All we’ve gotten is just rumors about what they’re going to do with the show,” said Smith, who took part in an open audition Tuesday at the Santa Ana headquarters of the Orange County Musicians’ Assn. “It’s a big corporation, and it’s really difficult to tell what they’re trying to accomplish.”

The Golden Horseshoe Revue, one of the park’s original attractions, is recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most performances in the history of theater.
