Tarkanian, NCAA Reportedly Near Deal; Coach Would Pay Legal Fees
Nevada Las Vegas basketball Coach Jerry Tarkanian is expected to approve a deal with the NCAA today for him to assume his legal fees in their 13-year struggle, estimated at $340,000, USA Today reported in Friday’s editions. The newspaper said Tarkanian also may pay the NCAA $21,000 in court costs.
“I think it will be signed by us and sent to them (NCAA attorneys) by the end of the week,” Tarkanian’s son Danny, an attorney in Las Vegas, told the newspaper.
The deal also would clear the way for removal of a Nevada district court injunction against the NCAA, which ordered Tarkanian suspended for two years in 1977.
It would protect him from the suspension by leaving an injunction against UNLV intact.
