1-Million Goal Set for Can Fund-Raiser
Students at Westchester High School are trying to collect 1 million aluminum cans to raise money to protect Central American rain forests.
The goal is to collect enough cans to raise $25,000 for environmental groups that are buying Costa Rican rain forests threatened by development.
The loss of rain forests and the use of fossil fuels have been linked to global warming caused by an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide and other so-called greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
The drive was organized by social studies teacher Ula Pendleton in an effort to show that young people are concerned about the environment.
Cans will be collected Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon in a dumpster located in front of the girls’ gymnasium on the campus at 7400 W. Manchester Ave. The dumpster, which can be reached from 91st Street, will be available every Saturday through Earth Day, April 22.
