Charlie Wi fired a sizzling 69--two strokes under par--to pace Westlake High over San Marcos, 385-547, in a nonleague golf opener Wednesday at La Cumbre Country Club near Santa Barbara.

Despite three-putting from three feet and missing two putts within five feet, Wi shot his best round in high school competition. Wi, a senior who finished second in the 1988 state junior amateur tournament, also eagled the par-five, 484-yard ninth hole.

“I didn’t expect him to start out the season quite this well,” Westlake Coach Lorin Maygren said. “He’ll be one of the better junior golfers in Southern California.”
