Brea-Olinda High won its second consecutive Southern Section girls’ basketball championship with a 50-33 victory over Palos Verdes Wednesday in the 3-AA title game at Cal Poly Pomona.
Brea-Olinda (30-0) won the 3-A and state Division III championships last season.
Guard Aimee McDaniel scored 15 points and Tammy Blackburn held Palos Verdes’ top scorer, Lisa Humphreys, to five points, as Brea-Olinda won its 51st consecutive game. It is the second-longest streak by a girls’ Southern Section team. Riverside Poly has the record with 84.
Humphreys came into the game averaging 15.4 points. She did not make a field goal until midway through the fourth quarter.
Palos Verdes (27-5) was led by 6-foot-3 sophomore Monique Morehouse, who scored 13 points.
Despite building a 23-13 halftime lead, the Lady Cats hardly resembled the team that dominated three previous playoff opponents by an average of 30 points. They made only 10 of 25 first-half shots. But they pulled away at the start of the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run.
Defensively, Brea-Olinda showed the form that held its playoff opponents to an average of 36 points.
Palos Verdes made four of 25 shots in the first half.
