Penn State and Brigham Young each received a record $1,009,038 for participating in the 1989 Sea World Holiday Bowl, game officials announced Wednesday.

The previous high had been $907,613 for the 1988 game between Oklahoma State and Wyoming.

Penn State defeated BYU, 55-39, as 15 game records were set.

HALL OF FAME

Two Point Loma Nazarene College coaches have been selected for induction into NAIA halls of fame for their sports.

Selected were Jim Crakes, in his 30th year of coaching track and field and his 17th at PLNC, and Carroll Land, who also has coached 30 years, all for the Crusaders.

Crakes, currently on sabbatical in Europe, has had both a men’s and women’s NAIA District III team champion plus seven runners-up in each while at PLNC, coaching 42 All-Americans.

Land is one of only 17 active NAIA coaches who has won more than 500 games. He pitched for Pasadena College (PLNC’s predecessor) in the mid-1950s, became coach of the Crusaders in his senior year and has remained ever since. He was named District III coach of the year in 1982 and 1986. In ‘86, he took PLNC to the NAIA regional finals, where it fell just a game short of the NAIA World Series.
