LOARA BASEBALL TOURNAMENT : Lakewood, Ocean View Top the Field

Lakewood High School, a semifinalist in the Southern Section’s 5-A division playoffs last year, is the top-seeded team in the 10th Loara baseball tournament beginning today.

Lakewood returns two key players from last year’s team that finished 27-4. Senior infielder Chris Gomez batted .430 last season and junior pitcher David Reeser was 11-1.

Ocean View, 18-10 last year, is seeded second. Ocean View returns four starters, including all-county shortstop Daniel Hernandez and pitcher Randy Karliner.

Los Alamitos is seeded third and returns outfielder Tony Napolitano and pitcher Todd Gragnano. Servite is seeded fourth and returns seven starters, including first baseman Rob Walker and shortstop Ed Crippin.

The 32-team tournament includes seven teams that won 20 or more games and 21 teams that qualified for the Southern Section playoffs in 1989. The championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. March 10 at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.

The first-round pairings, with all games beginning at 3 p.m. unless otherwise noted:

Laguna Hills at Western; Villa Park at North Riverside; Marina at Dana Hills; Servite at Cypress; Newbury Park at Los Alamitos; Katella at Irvine; La Quinta at Magnolia; Diamond Bar at Santiago; Downey at Kennedy; San Clemente at Ocean View; University vs. Loara at Glover Stadium; Fountain Valley vs. Anaheim at Brookhurst Park; El Dorado vs. Los Amigos at Boysen Park; Pacifica vs. Lakewood at Glover Stadium, 7 p.m.; Huntington Beach vs. Savanna at Brookhurst Park, 7 p.m.; El Toro vs. Sunny Hills at Boysen Park, 7 p.m.
