Rain May Hamper Cleanup of Beach

As another section of Huntington Beach coastline was reopened Saturday, rain was expected to reach Orange County today from a Pacific storm.

A section of coastline from Magnolia Avenue to Beach Boulevard was reopened at 6 a.m. after being closed three weeks ago when oil from the tanker American Trader washed onto the sand. So far, 6 1/2 miles of coast, from Huntington Beach to Newport Beach, have reopened since the Feb. 7 spill.

About 200 rock washers and beach cleaners were dispatched Saturday to work from the Bolsa Chica bluffs south to the Newport Wedge, officials said. British Petroleum reported that 22 machines using high water pressure were also deployed, concentrating on the bluffs and the Santa Ana River area.

Cleanup crews will likely be met by rain this afternoon. The showers are expected to continue until Monday afternoon, when partly cloudy skies and 25-m.p.h. winds are forecast.

The temperature is expected to reach the mid-60s today; lows are likely to be in the upper 40s.

The snow level today is expected to be 6,000 feet, dropping to 5,000 feet by Monday.

Forecasters said rain is possible on Thursday.
