HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Root Leads Chatsworth to 22-5 Win Over Venice

Junior Mitch Root had four hits, scored four runs and drove in six Saturday as host Chatsworth High coasted past Venice, 22-5, in the second round of the Westside baseball tournament.

Chatsworth (2-0), which capitalized on Venice errors to break a 5-5 tie, scored five runs in the fourth inning and 16 runs in the fifth.

Mike Mancuso went two for five with three runs scored and three runs batted in, and Reed McMackin had a two-run triple and scored two runs.

In other baseball games:

Kennedy 9, St. Bernard 2--Kennedy improved to 2-0 behind winner Cody Beaumaster (1-0) in a Westside tournament game.

Beaumaster struck out six, walked two and surrendered just three hits in going the distance. Teammate Lazaro Campos had a home run and two RBIs.

Sylmar 11, Notre Dame 1--David Romero tripled and drove in four runs as host Sylmar bounced back from an opening-game loss in the Westside tournament.

Huntington Park 11, Harvard 9--The Saracens fought back in vain after spotting Huntington Park an 11-0 lead in a Westside tournament game at Harvard.

Chaminade 16, Hamilton 7--Greg Galloway, a left-handed senior, allowed three hits in five innings in a Westside tournament game at Hamilton.

Aaron Weiss (three hits, four runs scored, five RBIs), Ted Corcoran (two hits, two RBIs) and Corey Gresham (three hits, two runs scored, two RBIs) contributed to the Eagles’ onslaught.

Northview 7, Crescenta Valley 5--Northview scored four times in the top of the seventh to overcome a 5-3 deficit in a first-round game of the Glendora tournament.

San Gabriel 12, Antelope Valley 3--Jade Freeman, David Cooke and Chad Eberhardt each doubled in a losing effort in the first round of the Glendora tournament.

Edison 8, Simi Valley 3--Josh Gingrish pitched a four-hitter, striking out five and walking none as host Edison (2-0) rolled in the second round of the El Segundo tournament.

Westlake 8, Millikan 7--Mike Lieberthal hit two home runs, had five RBIs and three runs scored to lead host Westlake (2-0) in the second round of the El Segundo tournament.

Torrance 7, Burroughs 6 (8 innings)--Burroughs’ Steve Bowler went three for four, including a solo home run in the second and a two-run single in the seventh that sent the El Segundo tournament game at Torrance into extra innings.

Providence 6, Ribet Academy 0--Ricky Mena and Hugo Castillo combined to pitch a no-hitter in a nonleague opener for both teams at Providence.

Highland Hall 7-13, Campbell Hall 2-4--Highland Hall, behind pitchers Tommy Tominaga and Robert Ramirez, swept a season-opening doubleheader at home.

Paraclete 4-3, St. Bonaventure 3-9--Senior catcher Andre Matawan went five for seven, including three triples, as Paraclete split a nonleague doubleheader at St. Bonaventure.

SOFTBALL

Alemany 19, Channel Islands 1; Buena 4, Alemany 3--Krista Gomez went two for four with a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs, and Patti Seresi was two for four with two runs scored and six RBIs, including a grand slam in the first inning, to lead visiting Alemany past Channel Islands in the first round of the Simi Valley tournament.

Simi Valley 8, San Marcos 0; Simi Valley 7, Burbank 2--Sophomore pitcher Michele Castonguay was two for three with two runs scored and an RBI, and Gina Skinner went two for four with one run scored and an RBI to lead host Simi Valley against San Marcos in the first round of the Simi Valley tournament.

Royal 9, Dos Pueblos 1; La Reina 7, Royal 3----Royal’s Cathy Grage (1-0) scattered two hits, allowed no earned runs and went two for three with three RBIs in the game against Dos Pueblos in the Simi Valley tournament.
