3 Students From County Win Music Center Scholarships

Three Orange County students on Monday night were among the winners of the Spotlight Awards Competition, sponsored by the Music Center of Los Angeles County.

Lynette Tapia of San Clemente High School won a $5,000 scholarship in the vocal music category, while the Cal State Fullerton team of Chris DuVal and Jeremy Johnson each won $3,750 scholarships after tying for first place in the drama division.

Jennifer Nunes of Garden Grove High School won a $2,500 scholarship as runner-up in the dance category. There were no Orange County finalists in a fourth category, instrumental music.

Eleven finalists for the awards competed at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for $40,000 in scholarship money. They were selected from among 387 applicants.

Tapia, a 16-year-old soprano, sang the “Gavotte” from Massenet’s opera “Manon.” DuVal and Johnson, both 19, performed a scene from William Shakespeare’s “The Two Gentlemen of Verona.”
