PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Three-Run Rally Helps Servite Win in Loara Tourney

Servite High School rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to defeat El Dorado, 4-2, in a championship quarterfinal game of the Loara baseball tournament Tuesday at El Dorado.

El Dorado led, 2-1, when Ed Crippen singled to tie it, 2-2, with one out in the seventh. Whit Haydon then singled in two runs.

Cliff Mierendorf earned the victory by pitching the last three innings without allowing a run. Chad Rolish hit a fifth-inning home run for Servite (3-0), which plays Lakewood in a semifinal Thursday. El Dorado is 2-1.

In other championship quarterfinal games:

Lakewood 5, Savanna 2--Ted Stevens pitched a three-hitter and had seven strikeouts for Lakewood (3-0).

Katella 8, Sunny Hills 5--Dennis Briggs had four hits and two RBIs for Katella at Boysen Park. Chris Drummond pitched 4 2/3 innings for the victory for Katella (3-0).

In consolation quarterfinal games:

Pacifica 9, Huntington Beach 3--Jeff Wozniak and Chris Shockley each hit solo home runs and Robert Toth (1-1) pitched five innings for visiting Pacifica (2-2).

Newbury Park 6, La Quinta 5--Bob Harrell singled in two unearned runs in the seventh to win it for visiting Newbury Park. Walter Dawkins went had two hits, scored two runs and drove in a run for La Quinta (1-2).

Villa Park 5, Cypress 2--Jason Martian doubled in two runs with the bases loaded in the seventh inning and Villa Park scored four runs in the inning to win at Cypress. Todd Wilson (1-0) struck out six in four innings of relief for Villa Park (2-1).

Santiago 4, San Clemente 3--David Smith had an RBI single to break a 3-3 tie for host Santaigo in the seventh inning. Mike Kissell (2-0) pitched a five hitter for Santiago.

In the consolation round:

Los Alamitos 10, Magnolia 9--Tyler Cashman doubled, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an error to break a 9-9 tie in the seventh for host Los Alamitos (1-1-1). Anthony Napolitano had a double, triple and four RBIs for Los Alamitos.

Irvine 9, Downey 5--Host Irvine (1-2) had only six hits but Downey made five errors leading to five unearned runs. Bobby Ray pitched five innings for the victory.

Dana Hills 15, Riverside North 8--Todd Futa had three doubles and four RBIs for host Dana Hills (2-1). Mark Spurlock had two hits including a three-run home run and Scott Holty had three hits and two RBIs for Dana Hills.

Anaheim 3, El Toro 1--Tony Krenn hit a three-run home run in the sixth and Danny Castro pitched five-hitter for visiting Anaheim (1-2).

Western 7, Loara 4--Juan Mesa had two hits scored a run and Eric Nygard had one hit and two RBIs for Western (1-2) at Glover.

Marina 9, Los Amigos 2--Marc Newfield had two hits including a solo home run for host Marina (1-2). Robin Lindsey had one hit and three RBIs also for Marina.

In nonleague games:

Brea-Olinda 3, La Habra 1--After La Habra scored one run in the first, Perry Miller (1-0) shut out the host Highlanders. Miller allowed only five hits. Brea-Olinda only had four hits but scored two runs in the fourth and one in the seventh.

Trabuco Hills 11, Rancho Alamitos 5--Chris Darvey had a triple and a home run and two RBIs and Steve Height had a double and a triple and four RBIs for host Trabuco Hills (1-0). Ryan Meredith had three hits and pitched five innings for the victory.

Bolsa Grande 7, Warren 6 (6 innings, darkness)--Bill Kercher had three hits including a triple, scored two runs and had an RBI, for host Bolsa Grande (2-1).

Whittier Christian 17, Norwalk 5--Brent Tucker had five hits, including two doubles, and five RBIs, and Scott Jordan had four hits and three RBIs for Whittier Christian (3-0).

Liberty Christian 10, Pacific Shores 2--Chris Buckels had a two-run home run in the fourth for Liberty Christian at TeWinkle Park in Costa Mesa.

Southern California Christian 6, New Life Christian 1--Nathan Lambie had three hits for host Southern California Christian (1-1).

Riverside Notre Dame 6, Orange Lutheran 5--Mic Buehler had a home run, a double and two RBIs for visiting Orange Lutheran. Kent Dowding had a single and a double, Lancers’ only other hits.
