COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton’s Power Gives Fuscardo No.100

Fullerton College baseball Coach Nick Fuscardo got his 100th victory when the Hornets defeated Cypress, 12-5, in an Orange Empire Conference game Tuesday at Fullerton.

Fuscardo, in his fifth season, has a record of 100-69.

Fullerton (12-3, 2-1) got three-run home runs from Gary Mota in the first inning and Jim Short in the sixth. Short was playing in his first game since transferring from Cypress.

Willy Speakman had four hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs for Fullerton.

Winning pitcher Tom Kelly (4-0) went eight innings, allowing five runs--four unearned--and striking out six.

Larry Perry had two hits for Cypress (10-8, 0-4).

In other Orange Empire Conference games:

Golden West 6, Orange Coast 1--James Marquez allowed seven hits and struck out four for visiting Golden West (12-2, 4-1). Robb Carabba had a two-run single in the seventh to put the Rustlers ahead, 6-1.

Steve McKowen and Gary Christopherson each had two hits and an RBI for Golden West. Frank Herman hit a solo home run in the first for Golden West.

Steve Hernandez, Tony Spaan, and Sid Maldonado each had two hits for OCC (8-9, 1-3).

Riverside 10, Saddleback 4--Mike Alto had three hits, including a double and home run, for visiting Riverside (13-6, 2-3). James Patterson pitched an eight-hitter with seven strikeouts. Brent Ferguson had four hits and two RBIs for Saddleback (6-6, 1-4).

In Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis:

Orange Coast 8, Riverside 1--At No. 1 singles, Chris Flood defeated Brian Giffin, 6-4, 7-6, and No. 2 Justin Zillman beat Eric Carlson, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, as Orange Coast (6-0, 2-0) won at home.

Saddleback 9, Golden West 0--Carl Hinds, who was an all-American last season, defeated Andy Stewart at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, for host Saddleback (8-0, 2-0).

Fullerton 8, Rancho Santiago 1--Casey Marshall rallied to win, 0-6, 6-1, 6-4, for host Fullerton (5-2, 1-2). Brian Moores won, 6-0, 6-1, also for Fullerton.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Cypress 9, Pasadena 0--No. 1 singles player John Swaino won, 6-1, 6-0, for visiting Cypress (4-4).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s tennis:

Rancho Santiago 6, Fullerton 3--Rancho Santiago swept in doubles and Mary Miester, 6-4, 6-0, and Heather Meier, 7-6, 6-4, each won at Fullerton.
