Three Section Players on Shrine Football Team

Three San Diego Section players have been named to the Shrine Football South team, and three others have been named as alternates.

The first-team picks are defensive lineman Dereke Fleming (6-feet-4, 230 pounds) of Mission Bay, defensive lineman Sale Isaia (6-6, 260) of Oceanside and defensive back John McCartney (6-2, 190) of Lincoln.

The alternates are wide receiver J.J. Stokes (6-5, 200) of Point Loma, quarterback Dan White (6-4, 205) of Point Loma and linebacker Pulu Poumele (6-3, 240) of Oceanside.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Christian Heritage College will play its National Christian Collegiate Athletic Assn. playoff game against The Master’s College at Point Loma Nazarene Saturday at 7:30 p.m., the school announced Thursday.

The winner will advance to the NCCAA tournament at Chattanooga, Tenn., next Thursday through Saturday.

The Hawks, ranked No. 1 in the NCCAA most of the season, were upset by Southern California College in the NAIA District 3 championship game Saturday night. Christian Heritage (29-6) was the district’s top seed.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Eric Etebari and Mike Mattarocci had 21 kills apiece as No. 8 San Diego State defeated No. 9 Ball State, 13-15, 16-14, 15-3, 15-10 in a nonconference match at Peterson Gym. SDSU is 12-9, Ball State 15-6.

SOFTBALL

The University of San Diego allowed 16 hits and committed six errors in a 7-5 loss to Southern California College. USD (5-4) rallied for three runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
