SDSU Catches UNLV’s Star Pitcher at the Right Time

The San Diego State baseball team’s trip to Nevada Las Vegas couldn’t have been timed any better. They got there on a day when Donovan Osborne seemed anything but the All-American he had been named. And they left with an 11-4 victory Friday.

The Aztecs (13-6) got to Osborne, who is said to throw faster than 95 m.p.h., for 11 hits and two home runs, one by Eric Christopherson and the other from Brian Grebeck.

SDSU’s Jeff Berry went two for four with two two-run doubles and scored twice. UNLV fell to 11-7.

Mark Ratekin hit his fourth home run to help Point Loma Nazarene to a 6-1 victory over visiting Whittier (4-12). Dion Dice (1-1) gave up only one hit in five complete innings for PLNC (8-5-1).

Nevada Reno shut out the University of San Diego, 12-0, in a nonconference game at Cunningham Field. USD (7-12) has lost six consecutive games. UNR is 8-5.

Santana graduate Kyle Sebach hit a bases-empty home run in the bottom of the 10th to give U.S. International (6-5-1) a 3-2 victory over visiting Cal State Fullerton (8-7).

SOFTBALL

In a doubleheader sweep, USD picked up only seven hits but took advantage of five Occidental errors for a 13-2 victory in Game 1. Julie Doria went two for three with a three-run homer to pace the Toreras. USD (8-4) won the second game, 9-3.

UCSD swept a doubleheader from LaVerne, winning the first game, 10-2, and the second, 5-2, at UCSD. The Tritons scored seven runs in the fifth inning in the first game, all with two outs. UCSD is 6-6, LaVerne 3-5.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

San Diego State (12-7) got 25 kills from Mike Mattarocci to beat UC San Diego, 16-17, 15-10, 16-14, 17-16. Brian Palmer and Nate Brown had 18 kills each for UCSD (0-15).

MEN’S TENNIS

No. 25 USD defeated Vanderbilt, 6-0, in a nonconference match to improve to 7-2. Jose Luis Noriega defeated Mark Agah, 6-2, 6-2, in No. 1 singles.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State defeated Clemson, 6-3, in a nonconference match at SDSU. Susan Hawke and Nicole Storto scored victories in singles and doubles for the Aztecs (4-6).

Kim Wright led Point Loma Nazarene (4-5) to singles and doubles victories as the Crusaders shut out LaVerne (1-8), 9-0, in a nonconference match at PLNC.

WOMEN’S DIVING

UCLA’s Kristen Walls, a freshman from Monte Vista, earned an alternate spot in the three-meter competition in the 1990 NCAA Diving Championships with a fourth-place finish in a regional at Provo, Utah. Walls had already qualified for the NCAA one-meter competition with a second-place finish in the recent Pac-10 meet.

In the regional three-meter, Walls finished fourth with 438.40 points behind BYU’s Courtney Nelson, Stanford’s Kristen Jensen and BYU’s Amy Matheson.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Christian Heritage (29-6) will meet The Master’s College tonight at 7:30 at Point Loma Nazarene in a one-game playoff in the West Regional of the National Christian College Athletic Assn.

The NCCAA tournament is Thursday through Saturday in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Hawks, who have defeated The Master’s College (19-16) twice this year, have been the NCCAA’s top-ranked team for nine consecutive weeks.
