Pinch-hitter John Meyers singled in the in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a tie and give UC San Diego an 8-7 victory over visiting Wayne State in the second game of a doubleheader sweep Monday.
Mike Morgan pitched a complete-game seven-hitter as UCSD won the first game, 8-1. On the day Chris Murphy went four for seven and Ernie Isola went three for six for UCSD (10-7). Wayne State dropped to 2-4.
San Diego State remains undefeated at home by defeating University of the Pacific, 9-0. At No. 1 singles, junior Ricardo Herrera defeated Igor Vuletic, 6-4, 6-3. Woody Yucom defeated Mike Sandoz, 6-3, 6-3, for SDSU (9-4). Herrera and Yucom teamed to beat Vuletic and Sandoz, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, at No. 1 doubles. Pacific is 7-5.
Sig Huber defeated Scott Milener, 7-5, 6-2, in No. 1 singles as UCSD beat visiting Rochester, 8-1. At No. 2 singles, Francios Monnar defeated Sal Mauro, 6-2, 7-6, for UCSD (3-5). Rochester is 1-1.
University of San Diego, ranked 25th in the nation, defeated visiting Navy, 8-1. Jose Luis Noriega, ranked fifth in the nation, defeated Chris Thompson, 6-1, 6-0, for USD (11-2). At No. 2 singles, USD’s Dan Mattera beat Efren Mojica, 6-2, 6-3.
SDSU defeated Texas A&M;, 6-3, at SDSU. Eva Olivarez defeated Susan Williams, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2 singles for SDSU (5-6). At No. 3 singles, SDSU’s Susan Hawke defeated Cindy Churchwell, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. At No. 1 doubles, Dorey Brandt and Taunya Johnson defeated Lynn Staley and Williams, 6-4, 6-2, for the Aztecs.
Dana Chaiken had the game-winning RBI in the 11th for UCSD in a 4-3 victory over visiting Azusa Pacific in the first game of a doubleheader. Chaiken went two for six and Cindi Murphy went two for four in the opener.
In the second game, UCSD defeated Azusa, 5-0. Tracey Kehr had three RBIs, all in the first inning, for UCSD (8-8). Azusa is 5-9.
U.S. International University and Grand Canyon University are tied at 302 after the first round of the USD Invitational at Carmel Mountain Ranch County Club. USD is third (304) and Point Loma Nazarene is eighth (335).
Tom Woliver of USIU leads at 71. USIU’s John Adams is third (73) and Craig Ballard fourth (75).
