COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Bardens Helps UC Irvine Stay Hot

Billy Bardens had three hits, three runs batted in and scored three times to lead UC Irvine to a 12-1 victory over United States International University at Irvine Tuesday.

Bardens extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Al Rodriguez had three hits and scored twice, Chris Gallego had three hits, two RBIs and scored twice for Irvine (16-8). David Bladow (3-1) pitched seven innings with six strikeouts.

Irvine scored five runs in the first inning. USIU is 7-14-1.

In nonconference baseball:

Wyoming 8, Cal State Fullerton 7--Cal State Fullerton (9-8) led, 7-3, going into the top of ninth inning, but Wyoming scored five runs on six hits, including Mike Thomas’ two-out, three-run home run that tied the score. Rigo Beltran’s RBI single gave Wyoming the victory.

The Titans scored five runs in the first inning, one in the second and one in the third. Frank Charles had three hits, including a solo home run in the third, for Fullerton. James Popoff (2-2) took the loss.

Cal State Long Beach 5, Chapman 3--Dan Barbara drove in two runs with a double in the first inning and one with a double in the third to give host Long Beach a 3-0 lead. Chapman scored two in the ninth inning but Tom Allison struck out with a runner on base.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 4, Westmont 0--Denny Berni had two hits and two RBIs and Brett Howard had two hits and drove in a run for host SCC.

Jim Dedrick (6-1) struck out seven and allowed five hits for the Vanguards (11-8-1, 4-1). Westmont is 7-10 and 1-2.

Christ College Irvine 17, Point Loma Nazarene 3--Lou Simon had a three-run home run and Michael Bradish hit a two-run homer to lead host Irvine (9-11).

In California Collegiate Conference softball:

Chapman 5-0, UC Riverside 0-1--Jacki Blake (7-1) pitched a no-hitter and Sandra Olivas had two hits and drove in two runs as the Panthers won the first game of a doubleheader at Riverside. In the second game, Chapman (19-7, 1-5) got only one hit off Riverside pitcher Laura Faye. Terry Perry had an RBI single in the seventh for Riverside (11-4, 2-2) in the second game.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Cal Lutheran 2-6, Southern California College 0-0--Deedee Pilkington pitched a four-hitter, striking out four, in the first game for Cal Lutheran at Southern California College. Sandra Steven pitched a two-hitter in the second game.

Christ College Irvine 2-3, Cal Baptist 1-4--Lisa Merenda struck out five to lead Christ College Irvine (13-8, 1-1) in the first game and Donna Joslen hit a three-run triple for CCI in the second game.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, Pennsylvania 2--Melissa Vaccaro defeated Gen Hyacinthe , 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, at No. 6 singles to give host Irvine a 4-2 lead going into the doubles matches, which the Anteaters (6-13) swept.

Cal State Fullerton 5, Temple 4--Roseann Alva and Kelli Moore teamed up to defeat Muffin Lupien and Cindy Barber, 6-3, 6-2, as Cal State Fullerton won a makeup match that was delayed because of rain on Monday.

Baylor 5, Cal State Fullerton 2--Roseann Alva and Kelli Moore defeated Andrea Guy and Katheryn Sale, 6-2, 6-0, for Cal State Fullerton (8-8).
