New-Look Chaminade Flying High

Share

Although Chaminade High already has stolen 30 bases, the Eagles’ most impressive heist was winning the Red Division title of the Westside tournament Saturday. The Eagles, 11-14 in 1989, lost all five of their games in the tournament last season.

Under new Coach George Vranau, Chaminade (4-1) has scored 41 runs and is hitting .337. The pitching staff has flourished. Freshman Keith Evans beat Montclair Prep, sophomores Chris Chumura and Ted Corcoran beat Taft and Channel Islands, and junior Greg Galloway beat Hamilton.

“It’s a complete overhaul, there’s no question about it,” said Vranau, who coached at Daniel Murphy last season. “They are so excited about the season now, they feel they can accomplish quite a few things.”
