A school bus carrying 20 to 30 teachers was struck by a hit-and-run driver in a pickup truck early today, causing several minor injuries and snarling freeway traffic, authorities said.
The accident occurred about 9:45 a.m. as the bus was headed westbound on the Santa Monica Freeway near Crenshaw Boulevard, said Officer Lydia Martinez of the California Highway Patrol.
It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were hurt or where the teachers aboard the Los Angeles Unified School District bus were headed when the crash occurred.
Martinez said the driver of the pickup truck fled the scene.
“It’s a felony hit-and-run but we have not caught him,” she said.
The accident closed three of the freeway’s four westbound lanes into downtown, snarling traffic in the area.
