COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CSUN Volleyball Team Rallies Past George Mason

The Cal State Northridge men’s volleyball team rallied to a 10-15, 15-12, 15-6, 15-12 nonconference victory over visiting George Mason University of Virginia on Wednesday night.

George Mason won the first game behind the play of seniors Kris Grunwald and Scott Metcalf. Grunwald led all players with 27 kills and Metcalf finished with 14. Middle blocker Raphael Tulino, who led Northridge with 26 kills, had five kills in the first game.

In the second game, Tulino had nine kills and junior Neil Coffman, who had 25 overall, added 12 as CSUN (11-6) evened the match.

Coley Kyman, who finished with 16 kills, recorded seven kills and Ken Lynch added five as the Matadors won the third game.

In other matches:

Grossmont d. Canyons, 15-10, 15-13, 10-15, 15-10--Canyons’ winless streak reached 11 matches as the Cougars fell to 0-11 in South Coast Conference play with a loss at home. Eric Hinkels had 17 kills to lead Canyons and Jack Quinn added 12.

Grossmont is 3-7.

Pierce d. Westmont, 15-8, 15-10, 15-9--Chad Blatchly’s 16 kills and Jamal Thompson’s 10 kills led Pierce (9-1) to a conference victory at home.

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 1, Canyons 0--Annette Bell’s infield single drove in Jamie Heggen in the fifth inning of the Western State Conference game at Canyons. Moorpark is 2-0 in conference play; Canyons is 0-2.

TENNIS

Cal Lutheran 6, University of Rochester (N.Y.) 3--Tapio Rantenen won at No. 2 singles, then teamed with Matt Simpson to win a doubles match in a nonconference match.
