HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Pitchers Shut Out El Capitan as USDHS Advances to Final

Pitchers Tom Shanner and Gary Remiker of USDHS combined to shut out El Capitan, 2-0, and advance to the championship game of the Hilltop-Moose tournament against Granite Hills today at 2 p.m. at Hilltop High.

In the second inning, David Sanchez doubled, advanced to third on bad throw and scored what proved to be the winning run on Tom Tate’s sacrifice fly.

In the Crawford tournament:

Clairemont 9, University City 6--Forrest Davis went two for three with four RBIs, including a bases-clearing double in sixth to put Caliremont ahead for the first time. Teammate James Gertenslager was three for three with one RBI. Clairemont improved to 3-3 and University City fell to 2-3.

Crawford 10, West Hills 3--Crawford’s Todd Davis was three for three with one RBI and teammate Chris Townsend got two hits and drove in two runs. Crawford improved to 4-1. West Hills fell to 2-3.

Morse 4, La Jolla 2--Chris Nelson went two for three with one RBI on a sacrifice fly and, while pitching for Morse (4-1), got eight strike outs.

In the Reyman-Pirate tournament:

Oceanside 3, El Camino 2--In the fourth inning, four Oceanside batters walked. One later scored on an El Camino error and another came in on a Jose Avila single. Angel Torres drove in another with a sacrifice fly. Oceanside improved to 3-1-1. El Camino dropped to 2-3.

Nonleague

Holtville 9, Palo Verde 6--Kevin Kerns allowed just one earned runs for Holtville and also contributed on offense with a run-scoring triple. Teammates David Rodgers and David Amavisca each got two hits and two RBIs.

Julian 10, Lutheran 1--Curtis Delgadillo hit a grand slam in the seventh for Julian and Travis Denmark pitched to six Lutheran batters and struck out five.
