A group of 22 students from California Lutheran University spent the weekend helping build a sanctuary and taking food, clothing and school supplies to children in an orphanage in Tijuana.

“It’s important to be concerned with other things, because of what we have here,” said Susan Voss, a sophomore who coordinated the trip. “We’re so fortunate.”

The trip was sponsored by two campus organizations, The Rotaract Club (a student-based Rotary Club) and Campus Ministries. The organizations have combined efforts with several groups throughout the United States to build the first Lutheran Church in Mexico.

“Saturday morning, a group of us helped in building the church. Sunday morning, we went back to town to buy food, clothes, balloons and candy for the kids,” Voss said Monday.

“It’s made a lot of difference to the orphanage especially,” Voss said. “Us being there, kind of showing people outside of the country that we do care. We’re going to try to make it a once a year trip.”
