LOCAL : Yaroslavsky Slams Record Store
Citing the need to “punish” what he called “the most incredibly poor judgment call I have ever seen,” City Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky demanded this morning that a record store pay the city for the cost of quelling a disturbance by thousands of rock fans.
More than 130 Los Angeles police officers in full-riot gear were required to disperse between 10,000 to 15,000 young fans who--excited by the arrival of the group Depeche Mode at the Wherehouse record store on 100 N. La Cienega--began pressing against the store’s glass windows, and surging forward to try to storm the store’s doors.
Yaroslavsky said it was “grossly irresponsible” to stage an event that “jeopardized the health and safety of thousands of young people.” He estimated the cost at $25,000.
