Dana Jones, who led North Hollywood High to its first City Section basketball title earlier this month, has been named City Section 3-A Division Player of the Year by the Amateur Athletic Foundation.

Jones, a 6-foot-6 senior center, averaged 20.2 points, 14.9 rebounds and 5.4 blocked shots for the Huskies (24-4). He clinched the award when he engineered North Hollywood’s 76-71 upset of Fremont in the City final at the Sports Arena.

Jones scored 29 points, blocked seven shots and had five steals, but the most stunning part of his game that night took place under the boards: He grabbed a career-high 29 rebounds to help knock off heavily favored Fremont.

Jones, who has signed to play at Pepperdine next season, said that the award has been his goal since the start of the season.

“I had a good season but I needed a big effort in the playoffs to win it,” he said. “I felt I needed to dominate every game in the playoffs. Instead of laying back like I did sometimes in the season, I went out and attacked.”

Jones leads a list of six area players selected to the 3-A and 4-A division teams.

Jermoine Brantley of Granada Hills and Cleveland’s Bobby McRae were 4-A selections. Selected to the 3-A team were Russell Baldwin (San Fernando), Keith Weinstein (Grant) and Marquis Wilborn (Reseda).

Brantley, a 5-11 senior, averaged 20.2 points and nine assists. McRae, a 6-5 senior forward, averaged 13 points and was co-most valuable player in the North Valley League.

Baldwin, a 6-5 senior forward (18.7 ppg), led San Fernando to the West Valley League title and was named league MVP. Weinstein, a 6-0 senior (16.4 ppg), was the leading scorer for Grant.

Wilborn, a 6-3 senior forward (15.4 ppg, 8.2 rebounds), led Reseda to a share of the Mid-Valley League title with North Hollywood and shared the league MVP award with Jones.
