STATE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Boys:

Dan O’Neil (Mater Dei, Santa Ana).

Came off the bench to score 19 pts to spark the Monarchs to the Div. I boys basketball state championship. O’Neil netted nine of his pts in the second quarter when Mater Dei outscored Riordan of San Francisco, 16-8. The Monarchs went on to a 62-60 win. Last fall, O’Neil threw for just over 2,000 yds last fall for the school’s football team and has signed a letter of intent with Oregon.

Girls:

Inger Miller (Muir, Pasadena)

Facing strong freshman Marion Jones of Rio Mesa in last week’s Alemany Relays only brought out the best in Miller. Considered the No. 1 girls sprinter in track in the nation, Miller timed 11.48 seconds for 100 meters to beat Jones. She also anchored Muir’s 00 meter relay squad to a strong early season clocking of 46.65.

RATINGS NOTES

Mater Dei has been named State Team of the Year for the second time. Coach Gary McKnight’s first No. 1 finish was in 1987 with LeRon Ellis, now of Syracuse, leading the way.

In girls basketball, Placer of Auburn’s 54-43 upset victory over Brea-Olinda in last Saturday’s Div. III state finals helped Morningside wind up as State Team of the Year for the second consecutive season. The Monarchs, of course, helped their own cause by beating Berkeley impressively, 67-56. Placer’s win also created a ratings mess. The Hillgals had to be placed ahead of Brea in Div. III, but they finished behind Nevada Union in their league. The problem was to either put Placer behind Nevada Union in the NorCal overall ratings or list Brea behind Washington in the SoCal poll even though Brea beat Washington twice. Since Placer won the biggie, we went with listing the Hillgals higher.

Two significant spring notes to report: Troy Dunlap of Culver City became the sixth reported baseball player in state history to smash four home runs in one game when he accomplished the feat in his team’s 26-1 romp last Saturday over Faith Baptist. Dunlap also scored six runs to tie a Southern Section record. Also, Brent Noon of Fallbrook broke his own state record in the shot put with a heave of 69-11 1/2 in a dual meet. Noon set the old mark of 69-8 1/4 last spring. The 6-2, 265-pounder also hurled the discus 194-7.
