HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Zinner Wins Two Games, Strikes Out 21

Alicia Zinner struck out 11 and held Fountain Valley to one hit--a bunt single--and teammate Phronsie Franco hit a solo home run to lift Thousand Oaks to a 1-0 softball victory Saturday in a Tournament of Champions championship semifinal game at Peralta Park in Anaheim.

A right-handed senior, Zinner struck out 10 and scattered five hits earlier in the day, pacing the Lancers (8-3) to a 4-3 victory over Los Alamitos. Franco also homered in that game.

Thousand Oaks’ Amy Chellevold had four hits and two RBIs for the day.

In other softball games:

Hart 3-3, Notre Dame 0-4--Kym Weil took a win and a loss as Hart split a nonleague doubleheader.

Simona Errico led off the fifth inning of the second game with a single and scored on Darcy Anderson’s single to give visiting Notre Dame a 4-0 lead. Hart rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning, but Notre Dame starter Becca Berline (4-3) held on to earn the victory after losing the first game, despite striking out eight.

Weil (6-2) took the loss in relief for Hart (7-2). Notre Dame is 4-3.

In the first game, Hart’s Weil, a senior right-hander, struck out 12, walked two and allowed two hits in shutting out Notre Dame.

Palmdale 4, Paraclete 1--A victory in the Palmdale tournament gave the host team (12-3) its second tournament championship in two weeks.

Senior right-hander Angie LePage (10-2) won her second game of the day and allowed only four hits while striking out four. LePage defeated Alemany earlier, 5-1.

Alemany 5, Quartz Hill 0--Melanie Howard, a senior right-hander, limited Quartz Hill (6-4) to three hits as Alemany (9-3) finished third in the 10-team Palmdale tournament.

Paraclete 7, Quartz Hill 0--Laura Staats had three RBI for Paraclete in a semifinal game of the Palmdale tournament. Paraclete’s Shannon Peterson struck out six and yielded three hits.

BASEBALL

Millikan 7, Alemany 1--The Indians were held to six hits, losing their second game in two days, in a second-round Redondo-Palos Verdes tournament game at Millikan.

Leo Tejada had two hits for Alemany (5-6), and Scott Goldsmith scored the Indians’ lone run on an error in the third.

In other baseball games:

Highland Hall 11, Mesrobian 1--In addition to pitching a three-hitter and striking out nine, Robert Ramirez (4-1) picked up three hits and drove in two runs in a non-league game at North Valley Colt field.

Shortstop Tommy Tominaga had three hits, including a double and a triple, and five RBIs for the Hawks (7-1).

Palos Verdes 8, Crespi 1--The Celts stranded seven runners and were held to four hits in the second round of the Redondo-Palos Verdes tournament at Redondo Union High.

Crespi (6-3-1) scored its lone run on Rick Marino’s sacrifice fly.

Calabasas 5-6, L.A. Baptist 4-5--Calabasas extended itself to the final out of each game, the second going to eight innings, in sweeping visiting L. A. Baptist.

In the first game, Calabasas made a winner of Greg Wimmer (2-0) when Pat Schaffer hit a bases-loaded single with two out in the bottom of the seventh. Wimmer pitched two innings of relief and struck out four.

Steve Klein took the loss for L. A. Baptist.

Klein (0-3) also was the loser in the second game, when he walked Sam Voita with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the eighth. Schaffer (1-1) earned the win in relief.

Channel Islands 7-3, Santa Paula 0-1--Jim Padilla struck out three and walked none in pitching a two-hitter for Channel Islands (9-3) in the first game. Channel Islands’ Jacob Cruz had a 19-game hitting streak snapped in the second game.

Montclair Prep 16-7, Chaminade 5-14--Left-hander Greg Galloway (2-0) threw a complete game and Justin Stark led Chaminade (7-2-1) with six RBIs in the second game of a doubleheader. Brent Polacheck homered in both games and had a total of 9 RBIs for visiting Montclair Prep (6-2).
