Irish Prime Minister Charles Haughey hailed the Oscar-winning stars of the Irish film “My Left Foot” today and his son, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, promised the cast and crew a hero’s welcome on their return.

Briton Daniel Day-Lewis won the best actor award for his portrayal of the crippled Irish writer and poet Christy Brown, telling the awards ceremony: “You have just provided me with the makings of one hell of a weekend in Dublin.”

Brenda Fricker won the best supporting actress award for her role as Brown’s mother and dedicated the Oscar to her.

“Anyone who gives birth 22 times deserves one of these,” she said.

Charles Haughey joined in a Dublin radio chat show linkup to congratulate Fricker, telling her: “We are all delighted and very proud of you. It is a great boost for our country and a tribute to all those concerned. They have produced a winner.”

Haughey hosted a dinner last week in Dublin for the film’s production team, financial supporters and leading actors.

“I knew that night things were going to be all right. You have brought great honor and credit to us all.”

His son Sean, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, promised a civic reception for the “My Left Foot” team and said: “I am sure the people of Dublin will turn out in force for the homecoming.”
