HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL : Monte Vista, Stone Hand Grossmont First Defeat of Year
Robby Stone allowed just four hits to previously undefeated Grossmont (11-1) as Monte Vista High defeated the Foothillers, 4-2, Monday in a nonleague game at Monte Vista.
Stone, a 6-foot-6 junior, had seven strikeouts to improve to 3-1. In the third inning for Monte Vista (9-3), catcher Vern Mullis (three for four) singled in Steve Ryan with Ernie Reyes scoring on an ensuing overthrow. Mullis scored on Darren Rucker’s single.
Santana 7, Helix 2--Santana’s Ferdie Hollis (2-0) had a three-hit shutout going before allowing two runs in the seventh inning at Helix. Santana remained undefeated at 10-0. El Capitan 11, West Hills 1--El Capitan’s Jim Marchesi was three for five with two doubles and two runs, and Greg Ransweiler (1-1) scattered four hits and struck out nine in six innings.
El Cajon Valley 3, Mt. Miguel 0--John Hayward pitched a two-hit shutout at El Cajon.
Valhalla 3, Granite Hills 3--Valhalla scored a run in the top of the seventh to tie Granite Hills. The game was called because of darkness after seven innings.
