SIMI VALLEY : Tests Conducted on Bones Found in Hills

The Ventura County medical examiner’s office is conducting tests on three human bones found in the hills south of Simi Valley to determine whether they come from a male or female, a coroner’s official said Tuesday.

A complete leg bone and two bone fragments were found within a mile of where the charred body of an 8-year-old Northridge boy was discovered, Deputy Coroner Craig Stevens said.

Workers from the Rocketdyne Division found the leg bone Thursday on a rugged hillside off Black Canyon Road and reported the find to authorities, Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Harwell said.

Sheriff’s investigators on Monday combed the rocky hills south of Simi Valley for other human remains but found only two other 2-inch-long bone fragments, Stevens said. It is unclear whether the bones belong to the same person, he said.

The discovery of the leg bone is unrelated to the slaying of Paul Bailly, Harwell said. Bailly’s burned body was found near Black Canyon Road a day after the first leg bone was found.

Ventura County firefighters found the boy’s body about noon Friday.
