ALL-GLENDALE HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL TEAM : Shooting Stars’ Success Rubs Off on Their Teams

The 1989-90 basketball season was highly successful for Glendale-area high school teams.

Six boys’ teams and seven girls’ teams advanced to the City and Southern Section playoffs behind cohesive team play and outstanding individual performances.

Those achievements are reflected in the players who have been selected to The Times’ All-Glendale girls’ and boys’ basketball teams.

The 10-member teams were chosen on the basis of a poll of area coaches who were asked to fill out ballots nominating their own players and opponents. Observations of sportswriters and college scouts also were considered.

Players, their coaches and parents are invited to The Times’ basketball awards breakfast, scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday at the Anaheim Hilton. All-stars from 12 circulation areas will be honored and players and coaches of the year from each area will be announced.

Here is the boys’ team:

Jrmirol Duncan, Ribet Academy--A 5-foot-9 junior, Duncan was selected All-Southern Section after he averaged 17 points a game and ran the show as point guard for the Fighting Frogs, who won the Southern Section Small Schools Division championship and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs.

John Hillman, Hoover--One of the area’s most prolific scorers, Hillman, a 6-3 senior guard, averaged 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Hank Hou, Marshall--A 5-9 senior, Hou contributed to all aspects of Marshall’s game and led the Barristers into the City Section 3-A Division playoffs by averaging 18 points.

Jeff Lord, La Canada--A 6-4 junior guard, Lord was the Glendale area’s leading scorer, averaging 23 points. He also led the Spartans to their third consecutive Rio Hondo League championship.

Paul Matijasevic, Crescenta Valley--A 6-7 senior, Matijasevic averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Falcons, who finished third in the Pacific League and advanced to the second round of the Southern Section 4-A Division playoffs.

Louie Nieto, La Canada--The area’s other top big man, Nieto, a 6-8 senior, averaged 16 points and nine rebounds. With Lord, he gave the Spartans a strong game from the perimeter and close to the basket.

John Padilla, Eagle Rock--The third-leading scorer in school history, Padilla averaged 16.3 points and four assists. The 5-6 senior guard finished as the school’s career assist leader.

Jacquin Moore, Ribet Academy--Another All-Southern Section player, Moore, a 6-3 junior, averaged 19 points a game to lead Ribet in scoring. He also was a clutch performer as the Fighting Frogs put together the best season in school history.

Alphonso Pule, Franklin--One of the most talented players to play at Franklin, Pule, a 6-1 guard, averaged 20 points and seven rebounds for the Panthers and was named to the All-City team.

Matt Vitti, St. Francis--Besides averaging 17.4 points and four assists, Vitti, a 5-11 senior, was also one of the best defensive players in the area.

Here is the girls’ team:

Tina Chimarios, Marshall--A dominant inside player, Chimarios, a 5-10 senior, averaged 17.5 points and eight rebounds for the Barristers, who won their second consecutive City Section 3-A Division title.

Berlyn Cosman, Crescenta Valley--The Falcons were winless, but not because of Cosman: the 5-7 junior averaged 18 points a game.

Jennifer Dalton, Glendale--Dalton, a 5-8 sophomore, averaged 16 points for the Dynamiters and played with the kind of maturity that could make her the dominant player in the area during the next two seasons.

Yolanda Davidian, La Canada--Davidian, a 5-10 senior, led the Spartans into the playoffs by averaging 18 points.

Juliana Holmstrom, Hoover--A 5-8 senior, Holmstrom averaged 15 points. She helped the Tornadoes to a fast start under first-year Coach Debbie Rinder and led the team to a third-place finish in the Pacific League and a spot in the Southern Section 5-AA Division playoffs.

Jenny Nicholas, Flintridge Sacred Heart--A 5-5 senior guard, Nicholas averaged 16.1 points and led her team to the Horizon League title and the Southern Section 2-AA Division playoff semifinals.

Debbie Nilsen, Flintridge Sacred Heart--Nilsen, a 5-2 junior, was also instrumental in the Tologs’ success. She averaged a team-high 17.9 points as Flintridge Sacred Heart finished 21-5.

Laura Oki, Marshall--Oki, a 5-3 senior guard and returning City Section 3-A Division Player of the Year, had another fine season. She averaged 20 points and teamed with Chimarios to lead the Barristers to a City Section title.

Karen Pearson, Flintridge Prep-- Pearson, a 5-8 junior, averaged 15 points and led the Rebels to the Southern Section 1-A Division playoffs.

Kate Stoll, Ribet Academy--Stoll, a 5-9 junior, averaged 20 points a game for the Fighting Frogs, who enjoyed their best season by advancing to the semifinals of the Southern Section Small Schools Division playoffs.

The all-star boys and girls teams, each consisting of 10 members, their coaches and parents will be guests of The Times at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 1, at the annual Times High School Basketball Awards Brunch where all-stars teams from 12 circulation areas will be honored at the Anaheim Hilton. The featured speaker will be George Yardley, a former All-American at Stanford University, who went on to become the first player ever to score more than 2,000 points in an NBA season. The players and the coaches of the year from each area will be announced.
