Brenda Pantoja of Bell Gardens High School, last year’s Southeast Player of the Year, has been selected to The Times’ All-Southeast girls prep team for the second consecutive season.

The 5-foot-7 junior averaged 20 points and 6 rebounds this year to lead the Lancers.

Other repeaters on the all-star team are Iesha Smith of Artesia and Angelina Marin of Glenn High in Norwalk.

The Suburban League placed three players on the team. Two players each from the San Gabriel Valley League and Whitmont League also were selected.

Here is a look at the rest of the All-Southeast team, which includes two sophomores:

Iesha Smith, Artesia--A 5-9 senior, Smith averaged 27 points and 11 rebounds. She has good post moves but will probably play point guard in college. She has recruiting trips scheduled to Oregon State, New Mexico State and Arizona.

Michelle Esparza, El Rancho--A good leader and a tenacious rebounder, this 5-8 sophomore averaged 22.6 points and 13.8 rebounds. “Once we got her the ball inside, it was a sure basket,” El Rancho Coach Frank Llanes said.

Angelina Marin, Glenn--A 5-8 junior and a repeater on the Southeast team, Marin averaged 24.6 points and 10 rebounds a game and had 163 steals. She plays like a big person but moves like a guard and is extremely fast. She was the Suburban League’s MVP.

Claudia Castro, Montebello--A good shooter who can drive to the basket, this senior averaged 19 points and 7 rebounds. She was also a force on defense.

Kim Ikeda, Schurr--”She plays good defense, is aggressive and has real good court sense,” Schurr Coach Steve Terry said. Ikeda averaged 18 points and 6 rebounds. A four-year varsity player, she is fourth on the school’s all-time scoring list.

Lori Klein, Valley Christian--Klein, who will play at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, did everything well for the Crusaders. She shot nearly 50% from the field and played great defense. A three-year varsity starter, she played on a team that twice went to the CIF finals. She averaged 17 points.

Nicole Teate, Bellflower--This 5-8 senior performed well in the clutch for the Buccaneers, averaging 17 points and 14 rebounds. Tough inside, she can also hit three-pointers.

Shaveta Collins, Gahr--In only her second full year in basketball, Collins averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds for the Gladiators. She is a hustling, competitive player who is being recruited by Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Amy Hughlett, Cerritos--The 6-2 sophomore averaged 11 points and 10 rebounds. At this point, she is strictly an inside player.

The Southeast all-star boys and girls teams, each consisting of 10 members, their coaches and parents, will be guests of The Times at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Anaheim Hilton for the annual Times High School Basketball Awards Brunch. All-star teams from 12 circulation areas will be honored and the players and coaches of the year from each area will be announced.

The teams were chosen on the basis of a poll of area coaches, who were asked to fill out ballots nominating their own players and opponents, plus the observations of college scouts and sportswriters. Each player will receive the traditional Times golden basketball plaque and award certificate.
