Lancaster Proposed as Minor League Site

A Van Nuys development company headed by former major leaguer Doug DeCinces has proposed to develop and operate a minor league baseball facility in Lancaster. A stadium would be built at the northwest end of Lancaster City Park with the help of the city redevelopment agency.

An agreement between the development company and the city will be presented Monday to the redevelopment agency board. The agreement requires that DeCinces submit detailed plans within 90 days. DeCinces played baseball at Monroe High in Sepulveda.

Derrick Gathers was honored as most valuable player on the Cal State Northridge men’s basketball team in an awards ceremony Wednesday.

Gathers, a 6-foot-3 senior forward, led the Matadors in scoring (17.6 points) and rebounding (7.1) for the second season in a row. He also had a team-high 62 steals (2.4 avg.).

Kendell McDaniels was recognized as the team’s top defensive player, Percy Fisher was most improved, Kris Brodowski received the Coaches Award and Eugene Humphrey won the Kiwanis Sportsmanship Award.

Brian Smith, an All-Frontier League third basemen who hit .449 last year for Agoura, will miss two to three weeks because of a hairline fracture of his left forearm. Smith, who was batting .353, was hit by a ground ball during practice last week.

Garrett Noel of Cal State Northridge will redshirt this track and field season because of a lower-back muscle injury.

Noel, a 1988 graduate of Crespi, placed ninth in the javelin in last year’s NCAA Division II meet.
