Beverly Hills, Fairfax and St. Monica, the top local boys high school basketball teams, dominate the 1990 Times All-Westside team. Each school placed two players on the squad.

Beverly Hills (22-6) won the Bay League championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section 4-AA playoffs before being eliminated in a five-point loss to Glendora.

Fairfax (22-6), traditionally a basketball power, maintained that tradition this season. The Lions finished second to Manual Arts, Los Angeles City 4-A champion, in the always tough Western League and went to the second round of the playoffs, where they lost to Cleveland.

St. Monica (23-6), which has teemed with blue-chip players in recent years, had them again in 1989-90 and beat some of the nation’s best teams in tournaments this season. The Mariners had a 13-1 record as Camino Real League champions, but lost in the Southern Section 5-AA semifinals by three points to Lynwood, which lost only one game during the regular season.

Fairfax and St. Monica also showed they were evenly matched when the teams met in the finals of the Mariners’ tournament. The Lions beat St. Monica by one point.

Among other success stories on the Westside were the return to prominence of Hamilton (19-7) after some lean years and the surprisingly strong showing of Culver City (17-10) in the Southern Section 3-AA playoffs.

Hamilton, which had struggled in the last few years, lost in the City 3-A quarterfinals by one point to North Hollywood and star Dana Jones, the most valuable player in City 3-A competition.

Culver, runner-up to Morningside in the Ocean League, won three straight playoff games before falling to Servite in the semifinals.

The all-stars include senior center Peter Micelli and junior guard-forward Jonah Naulls of Beverly Hills, junior center-forward Ryan Hickman and senior guard John Woolery of Fairfax and senior forward Cleveland Jackson and sophomore guard Jahi Bacon of St. Monica.

Others selections are senior forward Greg Hooks of Culver City, senior forward DeWayne Lewis of Hamilton, senior guard-forward Greg Vernon of University and senior guard Damian Wilson of Westchester.

Jackson is the only repeater from last year. Hooks was also named to The Times’ 1989 All-Westside football team.

THE TEAM

Bacon--He stepped in and ran St. Monica’s potent offense after senior point guard Mark Johnson was injured early in the season. He rewarded Coach Leo Klemm’s confidence in him, averaging 15.1 points, 7.5 assists and 5.2 rebounds a game.

Hickman--An All-City 4-A selection, he was a solid performer for Coach Harvey Kitani. He was the Lions’ leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 14.5 points and 11.5 rebounds.

Hooks--One of Culver City High’s best athletes ever, excelling also in football and track, he was Coach Marty Siegal’s most consistent basketball player. He averaged 14.5 points, 3.2 assists and 10 rebounds against taller players.

Jackson--St. Monica’s premier player of the last two years, he is thought by many to be capable of playing at the NCAA Division I level. He was potent inside, averaging 18.3 points and 8.7 rebounds.

Lewis--His all-around play was a key factor in the resurgence of Coach David Uyeshima’s Hamilton squad. A member of the All-City 3-A team, he averaged 20 points, five assists and 12 rebounds, many of them against taller players.

Micelli--An average player last year, he perfected his game through hard work and determination, which paid off when he was selected the most valuable player in the Bay League this year. His averages of 23.5 points, 14.8 rebounds and 4.1 blocked shots led all Westside nominees.

Naulls--The son of former UCLA and National Basketball Assn. star Willie Naulls, Jonah shot 45% from three-point range. He averaged 14.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists for Coach Jack Dyck .

Vernon--Another All-City 3-A player, he was scintillating whether he was moving with the ball at guard or without it at forward. He averaged 22.3 points and 7.7 rebounds for Coach Jim Nakabara.

Wilson--Westchester Coach Ed Azzam considered him the best point guard in the city, and so did many others. He was named to the All-City 4-A team after averaging 23 points, 5.3 assists and 6.2 rebounds.

Woolery--A point guard’s point guard, he distributed the ball with an even hand, giving his teammates the opportunities to do most of the scoring. He didn’t score often (an eight-point average), but he averaged 8.5 assists.
