Akeem Olajuwon scored 24 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, becoming the second player in NBA history with 1,000 or more rebounds and 300 or more blocked shots in one season, as the Houston Rockets defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves, 106-98, Saturday night at Houston.

Olajuwon had five blocks, giving him 332 this season, and increased his rebounding total to 1,001. The only other player in NBA history to accomplish the feat since the league began recording blocked shots is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who did it twice during his career.

“It’s an unexpected accomplishment,” Olajuwon said. “I didn’t know about it until I looked at the stats and saw the note at the bottom.”

Denver 118, New York 115--Alex English scored 20 of his 26 points in the second half and the Nuggets ended a seven-game road losing streak at Madison Square Garden.

The Knicks, struggling to stay in the running for a home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, lost for the ninth time in 10 games.

San Antonio 107, Milwaukee 100--Terry Cummings scored nine of his 24 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Spurs at San Antonio.

A 7-0 run by Cummings midway through the quarter put the Spurs ahead, 91-77, with 6:45 to play. A layup by Jay Humphries with 22 seconds remaining cut San Antonio’s lead to 104-100.

But the Spurs’ Rod Strickland finished the scoring by making three of four free throws.

Charlotte 115, Sacramento 103--Armon Gilliam scored nine of his 27 points in the fourth quarter as the Hornets won on the road for only the fourth time in 36 games this season.
