PREP BASKETBALL : Tarver, Leslie Named Top Players

Shon Tarver of Oxnard Santa Clara and Lisa Leslie of Inglewood Morningside were among 24 prep athletes named players of the year at The Times’ high school basketball banquet Sunday at the Anaheim Hilton.

The banquet honored the boys’ and girls’ all-star teams for each of The Times’ 12 circulation areas, with the selection of a player and coach of the year. Jim Colonna, The Times’ associate sports editor, was the main speaker.

Six athletes were named their area player of the year for the second consecutive year, including Tarver, the Nevada Las Vegas-bound guard who was named player of the year in Ventura County, and Leslie, who was named the South Bay player of the year.

Other repeat winners were Detra Lockhart of Washington (girls’ Central City); Brenda Pantoja of Bell Gardens (girls’ Southeast area); Linda Watson of Lynwood (girls’ South Coast area) and Ed O’Bannon of Artesia (boys’ South Coast area).

Orange County--Boys: Cherokee Parks of Marina (player), Tim O’Brien of Estancia (coach). Girls: Aimee McDaniel of Brea-Olinda (player), Bob Becker of Rancho Alamitos (coach).

San Diego County--Boys: Tony Clark of El Cajon Christian (player), David Ybarra of Sweetwater (coach). Girls: Tyeast Brown of Point Loma (player), Peggy Brose of Mt. Carmel (coach).

San Fernando Valley--Boys: Dana Jones of North Hollywood (player), Steve Miller of North Hollywood (coach). Girls: Anjanette Dione of Newhall Hart (player), Tony Magnante of Van Nuys (coach).
