PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP : Nelson Pitches Perfect Game for Woodbridge

Alisha Nelson pitched a perfect game as Woodbridge High School defeated Costa Mesa, 21-0, in a Pacific Coast League softball game Tuesday at Woodbridge that was called after 4 1/2 innings because of the mercy rule.

Nelson struck out 11 of the 15 batters she faced. Alison Ward, who had two hits, was the only Woodbridge player with more than one hit. The Warriors (5-7, 1-0) scored 17 runs in the third and fourth innings combined.

In another Pacific Coast League game:

Trabuco Hills 12, Orange 1--Christy Lunceford had three hits and three RBIs for host Trabuco Hills (9-4, 1-0).

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 5, Cal Lutheran 0--Colette McLaughlin pitched a two-hitter, striking out 17, for host St. Margaret’s (4-4, 1-1). McLaughlin also had a run-scoring double in the Tartans’ three-run sixth inning.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 9, Rosary 0--Jennifer Grootegoed went three for three with an RBI and Jennifer Cline had two doubles and three RBIs for the host Monarchs (13-2, 2-0). Jennifer Clark (8-0) allowed two hits and struck out three.

In the Century League:

Canyon 11, Santa Ana Valley 3--Senepha Thomas went three for three, scored three runs and drove in the first run of the game as visiting Canyon (13-1, 1-0) easily won the league opener.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 1, El Dorado 0--Beth Howard (12-2) pitched a no-hitter with two strikeouts, but visiting Cypress (13-4, 1-0) made two errors to prevent the perfect game. Kelly Snethen had an RBI triple in the second for Cypress. Melissa Miller pitched a two-hitter for El Dorado.

Los Alamitos 1, Katella 0--Becky Rosetti singled in Christy Bowles in the fourth inning and Shannon Skoglund (6-1) pitched a four-hitter for Los Alamitos (11-5, 1-0) at Katella.

Loara 2, Esperanza 0--Stephanie Wright pitched one-hitter for visiting Loara (4-7, 1-0).

In the Express League:

Pioneer Baptist 19, Garden Grove Claremont 5--Kim Ballinger hit a grand slam and Pioneer Baptist (6-2, 2-0) scored 11 runs in the third inning. Amy Miller had three hits and stole two bases for host Claremont (4-6, 1-1).

Buena Park 2, La Habra 0--Shannon Akau struck out six and allowed three hits and drove in both runs at La Habra. Buena Park is 9-1-1, 1-0.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 3, Sonora 2--Heather Ichinose drove in two runs with a bunt single with the bases loaded in the third inning for host Fullerton (6-6, 1-0).

In the Garden Grove League:

Kennedy 5, Los Amigos 1--Freshman Lana Jimenez was three for four and scored two runs and Cheryl Longeway (8-1), who pitched 3 1/3 innings, and Marlene Francoso, who pitched 3 2/3, each allowed a hit for visiting Kennedy (10-1, 5-0). Francoso walked in the only Los Amigos run in the seventh inning and Longeway returned to record the final out.

La Quinta 4, Santiago 1--Teresa Pinkerton pitched the final four innings for the victory for La Quinta. Carly Norton had a two-run single in the fourth for La Quinta (7-6, 4-1).

Garden Grove 8, Rancho Alamitos 1--Stephanie Smith (14-3) pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and Becky Eggers and Michelle Cash each had two hits and scored three runs for Garden Grove (14-3, 5-0).

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 22, Corona del Mar 0 (five innings, mercy rule)--Allison Potenza was two for three and had eight RBIs, including two on bases-loaded walks at Corona del Mar. Shannon Ellis, who struck out six in two innings and Shawna Bray, who struck out six in three innings, pitched a no-hitter for Tustin. Chris Garner hit a home run and the Tillers (6-4, 1-0) scored eight runs in the third inning.

Saddleback 5, University 0 (eight innings)--Jennifer Cerasuolo drove in two runs with a double in the top of the eight inning and Saddleback (10-1, 1-0) scored five times in the eighth. Desi Abrego (9-1) struck out eight and allowed two hits and one walk for Saddleback.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 4, Anaheim 1--Jennifer Butler hit a three-run double and scored on an error in the sixth inning as host Valencia got five of its eight hits in the inning. Natasha Dumoski (10-4) allowed four hits and struck out 11 for Valencia (10-4, 1-0). Anaheim is 3-6 and 0-1.

In a nonleague game:

Liberty Christian 10, Bethel Christian 2--Lisa Gray pitched a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts but walked six for host Liberty Christian (9-2).
