SOMIS : Percival Appointed to School Board

Lisa Percival of Somis has been named to fill a vacancy on the five-member Somis Union School District Board.

Percival, 37, who has been active in the school district since moving to Somis four years ago, said her decision to apply for the position was “a logical next step.” She serves on the district’s School Site Council, works as a classroom volunteer and is both treasurer and president of the district’s Parent Faculty Organization.

Seeking additional funding will be Percival’s first priority as a school board member.

“I think we need to seek additional funding for the school in order to further our programs and help with the increasing enrollment,” she said. “Right now, I am going to do research, as much as I can. I feel that there are ways that we can get more money into the school district and I want to pursue those means.”

Percival’s main goals in the classroom are to increase computer literacy and stress science and technology. “The trends in business today are very technology-oriented and we need to prepare these kids for that,” she said.

As a parent to a first- and an eighth-grader in the district’s one school and as a classroom volunteer, Percival said, she believes she understands the concerns of parents and teachers.

Percival was chosen from a field of five applicants and will serve until the November, 1992, election, at which point, she said, she will run for reelection.

The position Percival fills was vacated by six-year board member Loyetta Aukstkalnis, who resigned last month.
