Power Outage Leaves Wide Area in the Dark

More than 14,000 customers in downtown Los Angeles were left without power Thursday afternoon when a Department of Water and Power station experienced an apparent system overload, authorities said.

Service was restored to most customers within 15 minutes, but 800 electrical customers remained in darkness for up to an hour, DWP spokeswoman Dorothy Jensen said.

The outage at 2:15 p.m. affected an industrial area bounded by 7th Street, Washington Boulevard, San Pedro Street and Flower Street.

Officials believe that a system overload possibly knocked out a power distribution station at 1027 Santee St., triggering the blackout. DWP engineers were investigating.
