Share

Christie Engesser won three events and teammates Jennifer Dolstra and Jenny Sauter recorded career bests to lead Ocean View High School to a 71-56 victory over Huntington Beach in a Sunset League showdown Thursday at Ocean View.

The victory moves Ocean View (3-0) into first place in the Sunset League. Huntington Beach is 2-1.

Engesser, a freshman, won the 800 meters in 2 minutes 36 seconds, the 1,600 in 5:33 and anchored the 1,600-meter relay team to victory. In the 400, she placed second in 1:03.6.

But victories in the field events gave Ocean View an unexpected boost.

Dolstra, who had never long jumped farther than 15 feet 7 inches, won that event in 16-8 3/4, and also won the 400 (1:03.3).

Sauter won the high jump at 5-feet, a height she had never previously cleared. And the Sea Hawks’ Michelle Garay, who has been slowed by injuries most of the season, won the triple jump in a season-best 35-3.

“I really felt this would be our toughest meet,” Ocean View Coach Beth Chilcott said. “We got some luck today, people came through with good marks. I knew the field events would be the turning point. And the relays.”

Ocean View won the 400-meter relay, as Huntington Beach had a bad exchange on the final pass.
