San Diego State Keeps Scoring, Rips Lobos, 15-3

With San Diego State’s 15-3 victory over New Mexico Friday in a Western Athletic Conference baseball game in Albuquerque, the Aztecs have now scored 40 runs in their past three games.

SDSU hit three of the game’s five home runs, including a three-run shot by Brad Gennaro in the fourth. Gennaro was two for five, scored twice and drove in five runs. Jeff Barry and Brian Grebeck (three for six, three RBIs, two runs) also homered.

Ken Archer went the distance and struck out five en route to his first victory for the Aztecs (25-12, 7-0). New Mexico fell to 16-16, 2-3. SDSU and the the Lobos play a doubleheader today beginning at noon.

Tony Moeder’s two-run home run in the sixth inning broke a one-all tie, and the University of San Diego pulled away from visiting Santa Clara for a 8-2 West Coast Conference victory at Cunningham Stadium. The Toreros scored seven runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

USD’s Mike Newby (2-0) allowed four hits in 7 1/3 innings. Tom Cheek earned his league-leading sixth save. The Toreros improved to 15-21, 10-9. Santa Clara dropped to 19-18-1, 11-11.

After a home run in the first, Point Loma Nazarene wasn’t heard from again, falling to Claremont College, 3-1, in a nonconference game at PLNC. Galen Ishii was two for three with the homer for the Crusaders (12-18-1), losers of eight in a row. Claremont improved to 11-12.

SOFTBALL

USD scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to salvage a nonconference doubleheader split against Azusa Pacific, 4-2. Azusa won the first game, 4-2.

USD pitcher Hillary Savage won her ninth game in 10 decisions, allowing five hits in seven innings. Laura Cisneros led the Toreras with two RBIs. Staci Roper added a triple. USD is 19-16.

Kim Stutzman, who pitched a perfect game in her last outing, had a three-hitter in UC San Diego’s 9-0 victory over St. Mary’s in its first game of pool play at the Cal State Hayward tournament. Dana Chaiken went two for four with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Kathy Fogg and Lynn Moreno each went three for four for UCSD (13-8). The Tritons play today against Division II powers Humboldt (18th) and Northridge (fifth).

USIU took the first game of a nonconference doubleheader against 10th-ranked Cal State Sacramento, 5-0, then dropped the second, 4-1, at USIU. The Gulls came up with six consecutive hits in the first inning of the first game. Staci Mosher hit an inside-the-park home run for USIU (20-20) in the third, her first of the season.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UCSD remained undefeated in four Pacific Coast Volleyball Conference matches by defeating La Verne, 15-7, 15-12, 16-14.

The Tritons, 4-15 overall, got 10 kills each from Tom McCutchen and John Lim. La Verne fell to 9-9.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Sixteenth-ranked SDSU defeated No. 14 Brigham Young, 8-1, in a nonconference match at SDSU (12-10). The Aztecs’ only loss came at No. 1 singles.
