TENNIS ROUNDUP : Navratilova and Capriati Get Victories
Three-time champion Martina Navratilova and teen-ager Jennifer Capriati took vastly different routes Friday to reach the semifinals of the $500,000 Family Circle Magazine Cup.
Navratilova, seeded first and ranked second in the world, defeated Katerina Maleeva, 6-0, 6-1, in 55 minutes at Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Capriati took more than twice as long--and lost her first set of the tournament--but beat Helen Kelesi of Canada, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
Navratilova meets Regina Rajchrtova and Capriati faces Natalia Zvereva of the Soviet Union. The unseeded Rajchrtova, of Czechoslovakia, upset third-seeded Zina Garrison, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Zvereva beat Conchita Martinez of Spain, 7-6 (8-6), 6-0.
Capriati, 14, who had not lost more than four games in a set in her first three matches here, is 12-2 since turning pro last month.
MaliVai Washington earned his first professional semifinal berth with a 6-3, 7-5 upset of fourth-seeded Scott Davis in a $250,000 tournament at Orlando, Fla.
David Pate also reached the semifinals by defeating Stanford University freshman Alex Hombrecher, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
Washington, 20, who won three qualifying matches to gain a berth in the main draw, is the world’s 152nd-ranked player. Last year he was the top-ranked U.S. college player while at Michigan.
