PUMP IT UP:

When Aerosmith (whose “Pump” album is nearing triple platinum) invited guitar heroine Joan Jett to join the band as the opening act on its spring tour, the band did it with style--well, at least with rock style. On a tour of her own in Minneapolis, Jett opened her hotel room door the other morning and found a handsome young guy, dressed as a gas-station attendant (complete with an oil can). He handed Jett a note, which read: “Welcome to the Pump Tour from the bad boys in Aerosmith.” Of course the guy wasn’t just a actor, but a male stripper, who proceeded to take all his clothes off. Jett will join the Aerosmith tour April 17 in Jacksonville, Fla. (don’t be surprised if Aerosmith returns to L.A. this summer, perhaps headlining a stadium tour). . . . Van Morrison (who’ll be at the Universal Amphitheatre Thursday and Friday), has a greatest hits collection due out May 8 from Mercury Records. The 20-song CD compilation (18 on cassette) features classics like “Gloria,” “Here Comes the Night,” “Brown Eyed Girl,” “Sweet Thing,” “Jackie Wilson Said” and “Wild Night.” (CD-only cuts are “Queen of the Slipstream” and “Dweller on the Threshold.”) . . . And AIDS Project L.A. is having its second annual benefit concert tonight at the Club Lingerie, where musicians will all perform acoustic versions of Beatles songs. Players include Dave Alvin, Peter Case, Walking Wounded, Divine Weeks, the Horse Soldiers, Victoria Williams, Milo Binder, Eggplant, Marvin Etzioni and many more. Admission is $10.
