San Diego lifeguards rescued a teen-ager from the cliffs above Black’s Beach in La Jolla on Thursday.
Craig Nordsieck, 17, and Matt Morris were following a false trail when Nordsieck fell 20 feet onto a ledge, said Lt. Brandt Bass. Morris climbed the trail and summoned a lifeguard. Lifeguards rappelled to the ledge, strapped Nordsieck to a stretcher and lowered him to the beach, Bass said.
Nordsieck suffered scrapes on his leg and foot and a small cut on his head, Bass said. He was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Bass said Nordsieck told rescuers that he saw a sign indicating the false trail--one that does not lead to the beach--but thought he could jump among ledges to reach the shore.
Bass said there are many false trails along the steep cliffs. Each year, lifeguards rescue 50 to 80 people there, he said, adding that most follow false trails.
The two men are from Oroville, Calif., Bass said. They were in San Diego for spring break.
