SPORTSCOPE : Heat Opens Soccer Season Tonight

The Los Angeles Heat makes its 1990 American Pro Soccer League debut tonight, playing host to the expansion Colorado Foxes at 7:30 at El Camino College. The Heat features veteran goalkeeper David Vanole and standout strikers Jeff Hooker and Steve Sharp. Hooker was among the league scoring leaders last year with seven goals and 19 points. The Heat reached the conference semifinals last year and scored 35 points, second in the league. Colorado features U.S. national team sweeper Robin Fraser. Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for youths and seniors.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team faces powerful Cal State Northridge at home today at 3 and Saturday at 1 p.m. in Northridge in California Collegiate Athletic Assn. action. The Toros entered the week 12-16-2 overall and 5-11 in the CCAA. Northridge, ranked seventh in Division II, is 22-14 and 9-6. The Toros will be bolstered by the return of pitcher Vincent Aguilar, who has been out with an injury. The junior left-hander is slated to start today. Infielder Darrell Conner, the Toros’ leading hitter, took a 17-game hitting streak into the week. However, the Toros’ hottest hitter may be outfielder Robert Campbell, who has a nine-game hitting streak during which he has batted .420 and stolen 10 bases. Outfielder George Scott has an eight-game hitting streak. Northridge is led by outfielder Scott Sharts, who leads the CCAA with 16 home runs. Pitcher Craig Clayton tops the team in both pitching wins (eight) and batting (.399).
