Top Seeds Advance in Rainy Japan Open
Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg and Brad Gilbert advanced to the semifinals of the rain-delayed $1.15-million Japan Open on the hard courts of Ariake Colisseum today.
Top-seeded Lendl, the world’s top-ranked player, beat 10th-seeded Amos Mansdorf of Israel 6-4, 6-2. Edberg, seeded second, topped seventh-seeded Jim Grabb 6-3, 6-3, and third-seeded Gilbert defeated sixth-seeded Wally Masur 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
All of the matches were delayed several times because of rain.
The other quarterfinal match, between fourth-seeded Aaron Krickstein and fifth-seeded Michael Chang, was suspended until Saturday due to rain after Krickstein took the first set 7-6 (7-2) and led 1-0 in the second set.
Edberg will play Gilbert and Lendl will face the winner of the Chang-Krickstein match in the semifinals.
Top-seeded Catarina Lindqvist will play Eva Sviglerova and Elizabeth Smylie will face Naoko Sawamatsu in the women’s semifinals on Saturday.
