COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Gonzales’ Hit Gives Titans 4-3 Victory Over Chapman

Rich Gonzales’ two-out, bases-loaded single in the ninth inning gave Cal State Fullerton a 4-3 victory over Chapman in a nonconference game Tuesday at Titan Field.

Fullerton scored in the second on a home run by Steve Sisco, in the third on an RBI double by Mate Borgogno and fourth on an error to take a 3-0 lead but Chapman (23-16) scored three runs, two of them unearned, in the seventh for a 3-3 tie. In the ninth, Chapman pitcher Ken Hokuf retired the first two batters, then walked Kevin Farlow, Phil Nevin and Mate Borgogno to bring up Gonzales.

Huck Flener allowed two hits and no runs and had eight strikeouts through six innings for Fullerton. Winner Chris Robinson (1-1) pitched a scoreless ninth for Fullerton (22-16), which has won four in a row.

In another nonconference baseball game:

UCLA 15, UC Irvine 5--Ed Luna had a three-run home run to give Irvine a 5-3 lead in the second but UCLA took over from there. The Bruins (28-15) scored two in the fourth to tie it, 5-5, then five in the fourth to take a 10-5 lead.

Ray Walker had two hits for Irvine (26-18). Mike Rood (0-3) took the loss.

Dave Zancanaro (8-3) got the victory. Pete Janiki, a freshman from El Dorado High School, allowed a hit and no runs in the final three innings for his second save.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball:

Cal State Dominguez Hills 6-0, Chapman 2-1 (second game, eight innings)--Trina Hoena scored Julia Webb with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to help Chapman gain a split at Dominguez Hills. Cheri Schreck (8-7) pitched a three-hitter for the Panthers (34-14, 5-7). In the first game, Dominguez Hills (4-12 in conference) scored three runs in the second and two in the third to take a 5-0 lead.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s tennis:

Southern California College 6, Christ College Irvine 3--David Christensen won his singles sets, 6-1, 6-4, then combined with Finn Bell to win in doubles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, for host SCC (6-12, 2-6). Christ College Irvine is 1-15, 0-8.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

USC 5, UC Irvine 1--Carsten Hoffmann won, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 5 singles for visiting UC Irvine’s only victory. UC Irvine is 15-11.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 5, Cal State Fullerton 4--The No. 3 doubles team of Melissa Vaccaro and Erin Abe was the only Anteater doubles team to win its match. Vaccaro and Abe defeated Tracy Spellman and Kim Eastman, 6-3, 6-2, and each won her singles match as Irvine (9-18) went ahead, 4-2.
