A man was fatally shot this morning when he attempted to rob a camper in Angeles National Forest north of Castaic, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
The names of those involved in the 2:20 a.m. shooting at a campground called Frenchman’s Flat were not released this morning as investigators attempted to sort out what happened, Deputy Rafael Estrada said. The campground is west of the Golden State Freeway between Castaic and Pyramid Reservoir.
Estrada said three men apparently accosted a camper and were trying to rob him when the camper opened fire. One of the alleged robbers was struck and the other two fled.
The injured man was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where he died. Estrada said the other two men were taken into custody near the campground and were being questioned this morning. The camper who fired the gun was not arrested.
