HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Chatsworth Remains Hot, 12-8

Chatsworth High posted its seventh victory in its past eight games with a 12-8 Northwest Valley Conference win over host Granada Hills on Thursday.

The Chancellors (15-4-1, 7-3-1 in league play) were led by Nestor Martinez, who had a single, double and a triple. Mitch Root collected three hits and four runs batted in, Reed McMackin had a triple and drove in two runs and Adam Pearlman hit a two-run home run for Chatsworth.

“There are times we swing it real well and other times we really struggle,” Chatsworth Coach Tom Meusborn said. “Today we brought our bats with us.”

The Highlanders (4-12-2, 2-7-2) knocked out five extra-base hits, including triples by Alex Villa and Jon Condos. It was not enough to support starting pitcher and loser Bryan Martin (1-1), though, as Chatsworth had a 10-1 lead before Granada Hills woke up.

Danny Rodriguez (5-2) pitched 4 2/3 innings to earn the win, and Root was called on to douse a seventh-inning rally for his fifth save.

In other baseball games:

San Fernando 3, Taft 0--Junior left-hander Canto Franco allowed only Brett Reisner’s fifth-inning single and struck out seven to lead host San Fernando (12-4-2, 7-3-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference game. Franco improved to 4-0.

San Fernando scored three times with two out in the fifth on Alfredo Hernandez’s single, an error and a bases-loaded walk.

Reisner allowed only five hits but took the loss for Taft (8-10-1, 4-6-1).

Canoga Park 4, Cleveland 0--Doug Van Horn tossed a three-hit shutout and Valentine Douglas was two for three with an RBI for host Canoga Park (1-11, 1-10) in a Northwest Valley Conference game. Cleveland (4-10, 3-8) loaded the bases in the seventh but Bobby McRae lined out to shortstop to end the game.

Lincoln 5, Verdugo Hills 2--Scott Boudreaux struck out nine while going the distance for Verdugo Hills, but host Lincoln scored five unearned runs in the Northern Conference game.

Oscar Valenzuela and Pat Eubanks had run-scoring doubles for Verdugo Hills (2-11, 1-2).

Highland Hall 16, Antelope Valley Christian 1--Robert Ramirez (8-1) hurled a two-hitter and struck out 12 in the nonleague game at North Valley Colt Field. Craig Ernst was two for three with five RBIs for Highland Hall (16-1).

SOFTBALL

Hart 13, Alhambra 0--Kym Weil threw her first perfect game of the season and closed to within five victories of tying the school record for career wins with a Foothill League victory over visiting Alhambra.

Weil struck out 17 and pushed her season record to 15-1 with her 76th career victory. Hart catcher Stephanie Keeler hit a two-run home run in the first inning. She also had a triple and finished four for four.

Hart is 16-2, 4-0; Alhambra is 3-9, 0-4.

El Camino Real 5, Canoga Park 0--Chrissy Peck tossed a no-hitter and Carrie Reulbach drove in three runs with a bases-loaded triple in the first inning to lead host El Camino Real (14-1, 2-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Peck, a senior, struck out 10 and allowed only a fifth-inning walk to improve to 14-1.

Carrie Bishoff was three for three with two runs scored for El Camino Real.

Simi Valley 3, Royal 2--Down, 1-0, in the fifth, Simi Valley scored three runs to win a Marmonte League game at Rancho Simi Park.

Kathy Beasley went three for four with an RBI for the Pioneers (17-7, 7-1).

Sylmar 16, Van Nuys 1--Sylmar’s Ruby Gonzalez lost her bid for her fourth no-hitter of the season when she surrendered a single to the first batter she faced in the seventh inning.

Burroughs 3, San Gabriel 2 (11 innings)--Michelle Vahoviak stole home in the top of the 11th inning to give Burroughs (9-9, 3-1) a Foothill League win at San Gabriel. Erika Renteria (4-4) pitched a complete game for Burroughs.
