COLLEGE ROUNDUP : One Out From Victory, Chapman Loses in 12th

Down to its last out in the ninth inning, Cal State Northridge came back to tie the score and then defeat Chapman, 5-2, in 12 innings Thursday at Hart Park.

It was the fourth consecutive extra-inning loss for Chapman (23-16, 13-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.). Chapman dropped one game behind second-place Northridge in the conference standings.

Chapman led, 1-0, and starter Pete Coleman was an out from pitching his first shutout of the season. But Coleman walked Scott Sharts, and Denny Vigo and Eric Johnson followed with singles. Sharts scored on Johnson’s line drive to right field. Northridge scored four runs in the 12th off Coleman.

Craig Clayton (10-3) pitched all 12 innings and allowed five hits for Northridge (26-15, 13-6).

In nonconference baseball:

Southern California College 8, San Bernardino College 7--Denny Berni singled in two runs in the ninth for host SCC (23-14).

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Christ College Irvine 4-1, Southern California College 3-0 (first game 10 innings)--Visiting Christ College Irvine (27-18, 8-4) clinched at least a tie of the conference championship, its first conference championship in any sport.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, Cal State Long Beach 2--Trevor Kronemann defeated Vincent Mackey, 6-3, 7-6 (3), to lead UC Irvine (16-11).

Chapman 6, Cal Poly Pomona 3--Mike Zuecher defeated Juan Garcia, 6-4, 6-2, to lead visiting Chapman (10-7, 7-1).

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 9, Cal State Long Beach 0--Stacey Cadigan swept her sets at love to lead UC Irvine (10-18).
