SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

El Segundo rolled to a 9-0 victory over Culver City on Saturday night in the semifinals of the Palos Verdes/Redondo Tournament at Redondo Union High School.

The Eagles (17-3) led, 5-0, after four innings, and the Centaurs (15-4) never threatened, allowing El Segundo Coach John Stevenson to enjoy a chuckle or two in what he had feared would be a close contest.

Eagle pitchers Rob Croxall (6-1), Jason Wayt and Tate Seefried combined for a two-hitter. Danny Manjarrez hit a two-run homer for El Segundo in the seventh inning.

The tournament’s championship game will be Saturday at 7 p.m. at Redondo Union.

Long Beach Millikan 7, Palos Verdes 1--The Sea Kings (11-8) managed only five hits in losing the other semifinal game.

The Rams (17-3) used designated hitter Larry Satterlee’s three-run home run, three stolen bases and three singles to score five runs in the first inning off Palos Verdes starter Josh Leichter (2-1).

The Rams, rated sixth in the Cal-Hi Sports Weekly state 4-A Division poll, added two runs off reliever Jed Sanford in the second inning.

Second basemen Tryon Liesy blooped a two-out single to center field in the sixth to bring centerfielder Eric Pevney home with the Sea Kings’ only run.

Millikan junior right-hander Brian Keller (6-1) struck out seven, walked three and gave up four hits before being replaced by sophomore left-hander Greg Gregory after five innings of work.

Mark Antrobius, who went two for three for the Sea Kings, said Millikan’s big first inning “took the wind out of our sails.”

Antrobius, who started the game in right field and finished it behind the plate, said Sanford’s performance was Palos Verdes’ bright spot. “He was magnificent,” Antrobius said of the left-hander, who struck out four and gave up six hits and two walks in six innings.

Yesterday wasn’t the first time the Rams have knocked the Sea Kings out of a tournament. Last season, Millikan knocked Palos Verdes out of the Southern Section playoffs in the first round.

Torrance 17, Miraleste 7--Antone Williamson and Bryan Mullings hit home runs to power a 13-hit attack for the Tartars in the consolation semifinals of the Palos Verdes/Redondo Tournament at Torrance Park. The Tartars improved to 15-4, while Miraleste dropped to 13-4. It was Williamson’s fifth homer.

Mira Costa 14, Palisades 1--Jason Garner batted three for four with four RBIs, and Bobby Dominguez and Andy Owens combined to pitch a six-hitter for the Mustangs in a consolation-round victory at Palisades. Mira Costa, which got off to a 1-8 start, improved to 9-10 with its eighth win in 10 games.

St. Bernard 11-2, Chaminade 8-5--The Vikings split a non-league double-header at Chaminade of West Hills to finish their Easter break with a 1-3 record. St. Bernard, which lost twice to Loyola earlier in the week, is 12-5.
