Toomey’s Victory Gives USD Tournament Edge

University of San Diego senior Chris Toomey upset seventh-ranked David Wells-Roth of Pepperdine, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) in the quarterfinals of the West Coast Conference men’s tennis championships at USD on Saturday. Wells-Roth was the tournament’s second seed.

Toomey (27-7), from Poway High, also teamed with Bob Mehran to defeat third-seeded Wells-Roth and Ashley Naumann, 6-2, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. The two victories pushed 15th-ranked and defending conference champion USD to an 84-75 lead over third-ranked Pepperdine.

USD has three of the four singles players left in today’s semifinal round, which begins at 9 a.m. Toomey faces Dan Mattera, and No. 1 seed Jose Luis Noriega, ranked sixth, faces Pepperdine’s Alejo Mancisidor.

Point Loma Nazarene’s John Norton, Scott Dickey and Marc Gomez won in straight sets to key a 7-2 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Azusa Pacific (6-17, 3-6). Dickey and Gomez also won in straight sets in doubles for PLNC (10-12, 6-3).

BASEBALL

U.S. International scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and benefitted from pitcher Mike Whisonant’s four-hitter to beat Cal Poly Pomona, 7-1. Bato Rodriguez’s two-run single was the big blow in the fourth inning for the Gulls (11-34-1). Kyle Sebach went three for five.

Freshman Kevin Herde, from San Pasqual High, hit two doubles and drove in two runs to lead USD over University of San Francisco, 8-4, in the first game of a West Coast Conference doubleheader. Mike Newby won his third game of the year without a loss. Rick Doane, who had two hits and an RBI in the first game, had two home runs and three RBIs in a 9-4 loss in the second game. USD is 20-26, 13-14.

Mark Ratekin’s two-out, three-run homer in the eighth gave Point Loma Nazarene a 5-2 extra-inning victory over Christ College Irvine in the second game of a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader. Dion Dice (4-3) pitched a two-hitter. CCI won the first game, 7-6. Ratekin finished the day three for seven with five RBIs for PLNC (15-25, 2-12).

UC San Diego, which has swept five of its previous seven doubleheaders, was swept for the first time this season, losing 9-8 in nine innings and 12-5 to the NAIA’s The Master’s College (23-19). The 11th-ranked Div. III Tritons (16-12) were sent into extra innings in the first game after a two-out throwing error in the seventh allowed the tying run to score. Henry Jimenez led UCSD, going five for six with a triple, double and three RBIs. He reached base eight of nine times. Steve Nowlan homered in the second game.

Steve Boucher singled home the tie-breaking run as San Diego State (11-2) scored five runs in the ninth inning to beat host Hawaii, 7-2, in a Western Athletic Conference game late Friday night.

The Aztecs tied the score, 2-2, in the eighth on Jeff Barry’s RBI single. In the ninth, an error and a walk preceded Boucher’s single. Scott Dennison added a two-run single and Derek Vinyard hit a two-run, inside-the-park homer. Kurt Archer (5-1) got the victory.

SOFTBALL

Missy Cress, a sophomore catcher from Moorpark College, has signed a letter of intent to play softball for San Diego State, Moorpark Coach Will Thurston said. Cress, of Simi Valley, attended Royal High and was the Western State Conference player of the year last year. She hit .302 and had 30 RBIs.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

John Lim and Bryan Palmer combined to lead UCSD over Menlo, 15-4, 15-4, 15-4, in a Pacific Coast Conference contest at UCSD. Lim and Palmer had 10 kills apiece.

UCSD (8-16, 8-0) will be seeded first going into the PCC tournament, which starts Friday in Santa Clara.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

USD leads Pepperdine, 72-69, with one day remaining of the West Coast Conference tournament at Saint Mary’s College, where three of the four semifinalists--Aby Brayton, Sakolwan Kachareon and Tonya Fuller--are Toreras. Brayton and Kachareon advanced to today’s semifinals with default victories and Fuller defeated teammate Christy Drage, 6-2, 7-5, in the fourth.

BASKETBALL

Arizona-bound Tony Clark of Christian High contributed seven points for the West as its 112-110 victory over Team USA in the McDonald’s Western Wildcat Classic in Tucson, Ariz.

SOCCER

The Seattle Storm outscored the San Diego Nomads, 5-4, in penalty picks to take a 2-1 victory in Seattle. Lucas Martin scored at 79:30 for San Diego, forcing the overtime.
